LOCATION AND ACCESS
Puerto Montt, the Capital of the Region, is located at 1,044 km. south of Santiago.
You can access this city by 5 South Road Pan-American Highway. Buses belonging to different companies depart every hour from Santiago and regional stations. From Santiago, the trip to Puerto Montt takes 12 hours.
You can also get to this city by plane. A regular daily flight from Santiago to Puerto Montt takes approximately 2 hours. There are also less-frequent direct flights that connect northern and southern regions.

It has a temperate rainy weather. The annual average temperature reaches 12º C. Rainfalls reach an annual average of 2,489.7 mm.
POPULATION
948,809 inhabitants, according to 1992 census. Urban population reaches 61%, while 39 % corresponds to rural population.
ECONOMY
The main economical activity of the Region is agriculture, specially the cultivation of potatoes, oats, beets, etc. Silvicultural sector centers in native forest species: coigue, larch, cypress, lenga, evergreen beech.
Salmon industry is also present in this region. Finally, tourism is greatly encouraged because this Region has a number of natural resources, such as: lakes, rivers, fiords, canals, bays, estuaries, volcanoes, hot springs, water falls, and snow. This region also has a cultural and gastronomical prestige that complete their attractions.
ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION AND GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROVINCE
The region is divided into the following provinces:
Valdivia Osorno Llanquihue Chiloé Palena
The main attractions are: Valdivia, the Capital of the Province, which is well-known by its Historical and Archaeological Museum; the Spanish fortified towers from the Colonial period; Calle-Calle and Valdivia Rivers, the Botanic Garden, the Saval Park, the Municipal Park, Niebla Fort, the Fluvial Dock and Market.
Panguipulli Tourist Center is located at 120 km. northeast of Valdivia. It is situated next to Panguipulli, Calafquén, Pirehueico, Riñihue, Pullinque, Pellaifa and Neltume Lakes, which are ideal for practicing water sports and fishing. Near Panguipulli, you can find ski trails in the foothills of Mocho-Choshuenco Volcano, Liquiñe Hot Springs, Coñaripe and Huilo-Huilo Waterfall.
Llifén Hot Springs, a well-known spa resort, is famous for its exuberant and unexplored places. In the outskirts, you can find Ranco and Maihue Lakes, and Calcurrupe and Cunahue Rivers.
Corral, a bay with abundant vegetation, beach towns (Mancera), castles (San Pedro de Alcántara, San Sebastián de la Cruz), forts (Amargos Fort), ruins, and islands (Mancera).
Los Lagos, which is located in Longitudinal Sur Highway, has seven towns: Antilhue, Riñohue, Folilco, Molihue, Purey and Lipingue. In these places, mountains and valleys coexist. Riñihue Lake and San Pedro River are located nearby these towns.
OSORNO PROVINCE
The main natural attractions are: Mansa Bay, which is a little fishing port; Puyehue National Park, with lagoons, lakes, rivers, water falls, thermal baths (Puyehue and Aguas Calientes), volcanoes (Antillanca, Casablanca and Puyehue), and Antillanca Ski Center.
Osorno City, the Capital of the Province, is a commercial and agricultural-industrial center. Among its attractions, we can find: María Luisa Fort, Historical and Municipal Museum, San Mateo Cathedral, Rahue Mirador. In the outskirts of the city, you can find Puyehue Town, Puyehue and Rupanco Lakes, and Octay Port, which is well-known for the German architectural characteristics of its constructions. Centinela and Maitén Beaches are located nearby this place.
Puerto Montt, the Capital of the Region, is the point of departure to southern regions and the principal maritime port of the Region. The main attractions are: Little fishing ports, Fishing and Handcrafting Market of Angelmó, Diego Rivera Art House, a Cathedral Church, Manoly Museum and Art Gallery, John Paul II Museum, Pellico Beach, Tenglo Island, Vicente Pérez Rosales Regional Museum, and Alerce Andino (Andean Larch) National Park. Calbuco Island is located nearby to Puerto Montt. In this place you can find folkloric festivities, a parish church, a fortified tower and a square from where you can sight green fields and other islands.
Puerto Varas is the main beach city situated on the banks of Llanquihue Lake. This city is strongly influenced by German architecture and costumes. Here you can find: a casino, a parish church, a handcrafting market place, a municipal market, the German Museum, water mills, Venado and Hermosa Beaches, among others.
The main tourist attractions of Frutillar, another beach city that is located at the banks of Llanquihue Lake, are: Maqui and Frutillar Bajo Beaches, the German Museum, which houses the event "Semanas Musicales de Frutillar" (Musical Weeks of Frutillar).
Carelmapu is well-known for its De La Candelaria Virgin festivity, for its small fishing port, the Chacao Canal, Brava Beach and Carelmapu Church.
Cochamó, a tourist village that is located at Reloncaví Estuary, is well-known for its ulmo honey cheeses and for its church.
Ensenada, which is located near Puerto Varas, has the following attractions: Llanquihue Lake, Laguna Verde, Calbuco Volcano, Ensenada Beach, Ralún Bay, Petrohué River and Osorno Volcano.
Among an abundant list of attractions, we can mention: Ancud City, where you can find Chacao Church; Pudeto Bridge; the Regional Museum; the Cathedral Church; Chaicura and Ahuí Forts; Lacui Peninsula; Ancud, Manao and Linao Bays; Chonchi, where you can find both San Carlos and Villipulli Churches; Yal and Lemuy Canals; Tepuhueco and Trauín Lakes.
Chiloé National Park has paths, picnic areas, forest, and beaches. Dalcahue is well-known for its handcrafting market, its church, Tocoihue Waterfalls and Tenaún Church and Village. In Castro, the Capital of the Province, you can find the Regional Museum, the Folkloric Festival, Rilán, San Francisco de Castro and Nercón Churches, Millantué Hill Mirador, among others.
Some attractions situated nearby Castro are: Quinchao, where you can find Achao Museum, Santa María de Achao and Quinchao Churches, Curaco de Vélez Towns, Chequián and Malao Beaches; Quemchi, where you can find miniature handcrafting, a wooden creations factory, Popetán Lagoon, Chaulinec and Quenac Islands; Lemuy island, where you can find Detif, Lincay and Aldachildo Beaches, Ichuac and Puqueldón towns, Ichuac, Detif and Aldachildo Churches.
Finally, we can find Quellón, which is a terminal port of Pan-American Highway and a point of departure for ferries that travel to Aysén.
The Capital of Palena Province is Chaitén. Some of its main attractions are: El Amarillo Thermal Baths, Gonzalo Small Fishing Port, Yelcho and Chaitén Rivers, Santa Bárbara Beach, Negro and Blanco Lakes, and Michimáhuida Volcano.
Puerto Cárdenas, which is a port enclosed by hills, and located near Yelcho Lake, Yelco Chico Snowdrift, El Tronco Hill, and Correntoso and Yelco Chico Valleys.
Futaleufú is a valley connected with Argentina by Futaleufú International Passage (open all year round).
Palena, which is located near the Argentinean border line, has an aerodrome and an international passage. It also has many natural attractions that allow the practice of adventure tourism and ecotourism, sport fishing and flora and fauna observation.
